Adelle’s Maternity Session in Downtown Chicago

chicago natural light female maternity photographer

Take one look at these maternity photos of a radiant mother-to-be, and you’d never know she isn’t the girl next door. You’d never know that sweet Adelle, here at 37 weeks, went through periods of extreme darkness in the last three years, or that she miscarried twice before as a result.

It’s rare that you meet someone for 10 minutes and can still connect like you knew her for years. That’s how I would describe my time spent with Adelle. She’s spiritual and deep, and so wonderfully unlike any other client I’ve ever worked with. Maybe this is a result of the storms she’s weathered. I could see the love of her baby boy, to be called Leo, glowing through her. I remember one poignant moment during our session. She was lying on the bed when John Legend’s song, All of Me, began playing on the radio. There is a part where he sings:

‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh

During that moment, Adelle closed her eyes in peace and I just knew those lyrics, that song, was meant for her son that she’s carrying. Sharing in a raw, tender moment such as this is what makes my work worth doing.

It’s not often that I share a client’s private words, but Adelle’s to me were just so real and serves as a good reminder about how photography touches people in different ways.

“There’s my new approach at life. The darkness being shed away from me layer by layer. I then got to a place in our shoot where it was like you connected with what I was feeling. I am not sure that just anyone can do that. Maybe it is the mother side of you that tapped in… There’s a very good energy and flow about you that is open and free. I guess I am just thanking you for helping me express my point of view in life right now. Showing the world through my eyes about what this pregnancy has brought for me through life.”

Scroll through for more – and Adelle, thank you for allowing me to take these photos and share your story. I wish you and your family all the best!

Downtown Chicago Engagement: Megha and Hari

engagement session held at the brand spanking new godfrey hotel in chicago
I met this gorgeous couple the day of the shoot. Everything about this engagement session was rather spontaneous. Megha, the beautiful bride-to-be, settled on a location hours before our scheduled shoot. Said location was The Godfrey Hotel in Chicago. Luckily I knew someone who works there so I knew it was okay to shoot without prior permission. It provided a fantastic urban roofscape with commanding skyline views and set the visual tone for the shoot – which was equal parts vibrant, energized and fresh.

On perfect Chicago days like Megha and Hari’s e-sesh, I feel incredibly lucky to be doing what I love, exploring new locations, relishing in oldies but goodies… returning to the city feels like a breath of fresh air from the ‘burbs – and working with such amazing clients is icing on the cake!

Many thanks to Hari’s sister, Chithra, who gifted this e-sesh for the lovebirds! It’s great to know that someone, who’s been following your work for some time, admires it enough to gift it. It’s like the ultimate compliment, really.

Enough yapping. I’ll end this post on a sweet note … what an amazing couple! Scroll through and have a look yourself.

Baby Cupid: Unique Valentine’s Day Shoot

baby, cupid, unique, valentine

five month old baby in unique valentine’s day photos. he’s a baby cupid

Happy Valentine’s Day! I’m spending mine with my fellas – there are THREE of them this year! I did a similar shoot with Little G when he was four months, and now Rhys here at 5 months. Rhys isn’t quite as chunky, though!

I’m a fan of less is more when it comes to photo shoots. You don’t have to go overboard with props – sometimes just a couple carefully planned and placed items will do the trick. In this case, mini feather wings and a wee naked baby. (I had a red bow and arrow for Rhys, too, but seem to have misplaced it in the move.)

Clean, simple cute, unique, valentine

Clean, simple cute, unique, valentine’s day, toddler, boy, not cheesy, kids, picture ideas, fun

Here are a few other tips for creating a unique Valentine’s Day shoot at home:

1. Go for simple to really let your little one shine. Even giving them a pair of fun heart-shaped sunnies to put on can be really cute and get you some great shots while keeping them occupied. See Little G’s simple string of plush hearts above. Get creative!

2. Tickle your child, make silly noises. It gets them laughing every time and in a good mood. Who can resist?

3. Textures. Use a textured rug or blanket as the backdrop. Here I could have zoomed in or cropped around Rhys so that you only see the feathers surrounding him, but for my shoot, I intended to show Rhys as Cupid and the full glory of his wings. So play around with shooting at different angles or close-ups, and remember, editing is your friend!

Happy Valentine’s Day, to you and yours!
