Take one look at these maternity photos of a radiant mother-to-be, and you’d never know she isn’t the girl next door. You’d never know that sweet Adelle, here at 37 weeks, went through periods of extreme darkness in the last three years, or that she miscarried twice before as a result.
It’s rare that you meet someone for 10 minutes and can still connect like you knew her for years. That’s how I would describe my time spent with Adelle. She’s spiritual and deep, and so wonderfully unlike any other client I’ve ever worked with. Maybe this is a result of the storms she’s weathered. I could see the love of her baby boy, to be called Leo, glowing through her. I remember one poignant moment during our session. She was lying on the bed when John Legend’s song, All of Me, began playing on the radio. There is a part where he sings:
‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh
During that moment, Adelle closed her eyes in peace and I just knew those lyrics, that song, was meant for her son that she’s carrying. Sharing in a raw, tender moment such as this is what makes my work worth doing.
It’s not often that I share a client’s private words, but Adelle’s to me were just so real and serves as a good reminder about how photography touches people in different ways.
“There’s my new approach at life. The darkness being shed away from me layer by layer. I then got to a place in our shoot where it was like you connected with what I was feeling. I am not sure that just anyone can do that. Maybe it is the mother side of you that tapped in… There’s a very good energy and flow about you that is open and free. I guess I am just thanking you for helping me express my point of view in life right now. Showing the world through my eyes about what this pregnancy has brought for me through life.”
