chicago indian hindu weddings

I’m honored to have my work highlighted once again on IndianWeddingSite.com! Last week, my photos from Rajul and Mehul’s wedding made it on the front page of the web site’s blog––in four separate posts! (That’s just how fabulous their wedding was.) Besides real weddings, the web site also contains a bevy of trend reports in this industry, event planning tools, and interactive, local vendor directories specific to the needs of Indian weddings. Oh, and the web site is obviously a Pinning-mecca for gorgeous inspo! You can see the last time my work was selected for this site over here. Many of my bride and groom couples are planning Indian weddings, so guys, take a moment to peruse this fantastic web site resource! From my lips to your ears . . .

mother and toddler photography

A month after Little G turned one, I did a sweet, little “Mommy & Me” session with Suzy. As you all know, she’s not only a colleague in the industry, but also a good friend. (The girl even let me borrow her beautiful bedroom for this shoot, just because I’m obsessed with that tufted headboard of hers!)

I trust Suzy implicitly to capture my family in all those precious moments––the playful, the simply sweet, even the intimate. If you wish, much further down this post you’ll see some photos of me breastfeeding Little G, who had started signing “Milk” during the shoot.

You might wonder if there was any hesitation on my part to post these on my blog. The answer is not at all! There’s no wardrobe malfunction, guys, it’s just a very natural, normal moment between momma and baby. Unfortunately, although understandably, when I shoot new moms in this light, I’ve never been given permission to post. So I’ve decided to post my own photos here because they beautifully showcase Suzy’s artistry and skill as a family photographer.

Speaking of skill, Little G made Suzy weeerk! He was so hyper that day. He wouldn’t sit for long or stay on my lap or even lean on my shoulders like he normally does. Suzy’s dogs were yapping in the next room, and Little G, he absolutely loves dogs! Still, she worked her magic and we left with these beautiful captures.

I’ve learned a lot about motherhood over the last 14 months. The most important things I’ve discovered? The key to survival is to sleep when he sleeps. Sign language was a start to a better relationship for all three of us because he feels good when he knows we understand him. And finally, stop reading the baby books and forget about what others are doing. . . whether that be about breastfeeding or something else, just go with what feels right for you and your baby!

Hi! I just came across your beautiful nursing pictures while looking for inspiration for a nursing session I have scheduled with my photographer! I’m in love with your pictures!!! Do you remember where you bought your dress from? I would love something just like that! Thank you and good for you, mama for not being afraid to bare it all!

You know the holidays are here when:

  1. Love Actually starts playing on tv.
  2. You start getting invitations to Ugly Christmas Sweater parties.
  3. Photo cards start flooding your mailbox.

Speaking of, there’s still time to whip up a fun, festive shoot for this year’s family holiday card! Like the one I did of my Little G and his cousins, Mekhi and Elia, just last weekend. We reenacted the classic “Getting the Tree” shot in my parents’ backyard using a couple well-thought out props to tell the story. (We used just the top third of an artificial tree here to get the right proportions!)

Elia was a ham to work with. Mekhi only smiles for me when he thinks no one else is looking. And Little G, well, he just loves the camera. Obvi. All in all, we captured some fun funny photos that day that we’d be proud to put on a holiday card . . . coming soon to a mailbox near you!

So, how do you snap adorably cute/funny holiday photos of your toddler?

  • Research locations. Is there a place in your town that reminds you of the season? Maybe it is the cheery, red fire station or the Christmas tree lot in the Home Depot down the street, or even more simply, your own home––you know, where the heart is!
  • Check out Pinterest for inspiration. My holiday photos of Little G from one year ago have been repined an astounding 41,000 times on Pinterest! So get online stat, there is a whole world out there waiting for you to pin!
  • Let her have fun and be spontaneous. Forget the poses and reminding her to say “Cheese!” at the camera. Candid shots often come out better for toddler-age children due to their mobility and big personalities, like these of Little G, Elia, and Mekhi. Save the posing for infants!
  • Explore different angles. Look at your child from above, below, and through things in the environment. Chances are, you will elicit a silly, melt-your-heart smile from your little one when they see you hanging out of a tree!
  • Focus on just one or two props. You don’t need a lot of fancy things to make it a holiday photo. Sometimes a special knit hat, a string of white lights, and your little one’s sweetest grin is all that is needed, like this shoot, for example.
  • Play a musical instrument, video, or even a harmonica, right next to your camera. I got this awesome tip from Suzy, and let me tell you, it works wonders to get your child’s attention!
  • Did your little one insist on wearing a neon orange jumper, the one with the tiger stripes? You can always convert your shots to black and white for a clean, timeless look!

Now that you have that perfect family holiday photo, all that is left to do is print, stamp and mail! Easy peasy.
