Well, hello there, lover.

This is Heidi, and she’s my latest bridal boudoir conquest. She and her newly minted hubby live out of state and came to Chicago to hang with friends. That’s what she told the husb, anyway. Little did he know that she was in a South Loop apartment, rocking this sexy shoot and commissioning a special album for him to keep when he’s away on business. What a good wife!

Not surprisingly (but disappointingly) only 60% of my boudoir clients allow me to blog about their sessions. I wish the number was higher, but still, I’m glad you get to see another side of my work from time to time. Jen was particularly fun to work with. She has this girl-next-door quality, is ostensibly super sweet, and yet check her out, working those knock-your-socks-off gazes!

The best tips I have for doing a boudoir shoot are: posing matters (I can coach you), natural lighting is best, and above all, BE CONFIDENT and throw caution to the wind!

Thanks, Heidi, for being such a cool girl. Something tells me those long, lonely travel days will be no more. Scroll through and let me know what you all think!

xo, Melissa

Beautiful work, once again,Melissa!!!!! I especially love the last photo. Hopefully, I will be doing a shoot like this soon… Diet-willing. Bravo, you’re a true artist.

I took these photos for a friend, who just delivered a healthy baby boy a couple weeks ago! He’s almost nine pounds and sweetly named after his daddy, Curtis. At the time of this shoot, she was about 36 weeks. Vilayphone and I talked a lot about what she should expect. Because you know, I’m a pro x 2 and all. Yea, sure…

I told her about how her heart will just burst at first sight, first touch of her baby. Of course, I also told her about the hardships. The stuff that most people don’t talk about. Like how often you have to feed the baby, around the clock. And like how breastfeeding seriously hurts!

It was utter chaos during the shoot, though I don’t think you can tell at all by looking at these airy, light-filled photos that were taken in our friend’s apartment. My sister-in-law, also a good friend of Vilayphone’s, was also present with my niece and nephew, and they were both running around wild. Little Wee G (aka Rhys) also came along for the ride but clearly didn’t like it because he couldn’t stop crying off and on. At one point I had to wear him in the carrier and shoot at the same time! (Now how’s THAT for multi-tasking, Gisele??) It was so chaotic, it was almost hysterical! Welcome to motherhood…

So, Vilayphone… my gift to you… what to expect when you’re expecting. (In your case, how do you feel about it all now that you have a real baby in your arms? Have you adjusted to all the craziness yet, that intense surge of love within your heart?

Thanks for letting me capture your beautiful self, Momma! Scroll through to see the full session!

Since posting the photo of my Little Wee G yesterday on Facebook, I got many, many emails from photographers, asking me how I created that shot.  I recreated that scene again today so you can get an idea what was done.

I propped both Little G and Little Wee G separately on the table so they can get more of the bokeh effect from the tree since there’s more lights up top than the bottom.  Always remember, SAFETY FIRST!!!  The Giant was less than a foot away and was there to help assist me during Little Wee G’s session.  I can’t stress this enough, safety, safety, safety!!

I edited all three photos in Photoshop and this is what I did…

-adjust the levels to brighten up the photo to the amount desired

-used actions (harriet pop) from peta mazey, the childs play series

-sharpened with kevin kubota’s magic sharp

That’s it!  Just three simple steps!! If you want to achieve bigger bokehs, get closer to your subject and always shoot wide (f/1.4)
