With Valentine’s Day approaching, my mind is on love and lust, and all things in between, and it’s no surprise that “boudoir” and “boudoir photographer” are always the top keyword searches driving new traffic to my website and blog. But while the obvious reason for booking this sexy session is to surprise a partner, there is no rule that says you have to be female, that you can’t do this with your lover, or even simply for yourself, just for the helluva it! In fact, I recently had a plus-size client who was celebrating a long road to discovering her inner confidence with a boudoir shoot––she really owned her femininity and worked all the sassy angles, which made this boudoir shoot one of my all-time favorites!

Here are some things to know if you’re not-so-secretly considering a boudoir shoot:

1. Location

Choose a location that has lots of natural light and one that offers a few different backgrounds or textures to pose against. I’ve often found that a posh hotel room lends a modern-day sexy appeal, while a charming B&B evokes a different kind of creative vision. Your own home is also a good location because you already feel comfortable in the environment, and you can enlist the help of an heirloom rental service like ShadowBox Dreams to glam it up!

2. Styling/Props

Choose lingerie/outfits that make you feel sexy. A good rule of thumb: bring something white, something black, something in a bright color, and don’t forget a pair of sexy heels. (Your birthday suit is also a good option.)

3. Bubbly

A few sips of bubbly can go a long way in helping you to relax during the shoot. Have fun, play some bootylicious music, be silly!

4. Posing

Don’t try to be sexy. Don’t try to be a model. Just be. My goal as the photographer is to make my clients laugh and to feel comfortable around me. Most people aren’t used to lounging around wearing next to nothing (or nothing at all) in front of the camera, so don’t be worried if the first few shots feel a bit stiff. Your personality will come through in the end.

Today I’m kicking off a new series called “Pinspired”. If you haven’t joined Pinterest yet, it’s not too late! I use Pinterest to maintain inspiration boards across many categories and topics in life, not all of which are photography-related. I often speak of my quest for diversity in life––which inspires me as a woman, wife, mother, and finally, a photographer––and Pinterest only fuels this passion! In fact, if you follow me here, you’ll see that some of my favorite boards to pin to are For The Kids, Babies, and Yummy Food I’ll Never Get Around to Making. I find Pinterest to be a wonderful and constant reminder to search for beauty and innovation in unexpected places, helps me stay in a creative mindset and be inspired by the social networks surrounding us all.

Here are my top five pins that inspired me this week!Asian Noodle Soup: Anyone who knows me, knows I Do. Not. Cook. But, this looks so easy and perfect for a snowy Chicago night like yesterday that I’m thinking of changing my board name to “Yummy Foods I Will Get Around to Making.”

DIY Finger Print Valentines: Looking for a super easy Vday craft to do with your little one? This one tops my list to tackle with Little G for The Giant!

Conversation Heart Cheesecakes: While we’re on the subject of a certain Hallmark holiday, I may or may not be planning to bake these mini heart-shaped cheesecakes for The Giant. Though mine might say “Why is this off?” (like what I wanted to get engraved on The Giant’s wedding band). I’ve got a weird sense of humor, I know. What would yours say?

Stunning Baby Photography: The interview with photographer Jennifer Dell is incredibly inspiring for many reasons, but I think I love this photo most for its natural-light beauty and simplicity. Simplicity in the context of a wee little baby in a simple setting, uncluttered by objects and things in daily life.

Legs for Days: Seriously sexy. That’s it.

What are you Pinspired by, and how have you incorporated creative ideas from around the web into your life?

2012 has been an interesting year. Turned 35, said happy first birthday to my beautiful baby boy, helped create my business’s first promotional video, AND President Obama was re-elected by a wide margin (woot!). In 2013, I hope to expand my business and hire staff, like an office manager to help with the behind-the-scenes details of running the biz, so that I can focus more on what I love to do: capturing special moments and telling your story.

In 2012 in particular, I’ve tried really hard to push my own creative limits. I tried new angles, new camera techniques. Each day I consciously work at finding one real nugget of inspiration in life––visual or intellectual––and then maintaining that inspiration. It is that constant creativity which allows me to “shoot on the fly” at action-packed weddings, to make a posed, sleeping newborn look special in his own right, and to capture the magic between a newly engaged couple.

I make it a point to keenly observe anything and everything. My inspiration could come from anything, but mostly different media than photography, like old films, or even just general people-watching. I’m obsessed with personalities and people’s energy! Sometimes I’m watching a movie and think to myself, Yes, yes, I could incorporate that scene into a shoot.

So, here’s a bit of collective inspiration for you… all my favorite photos from 2012! These are the ones that would cause me to pause if I were flipping through a magazine. Each of these speak to me in different ways. Without further ado, my 2012 sum up…

Looking over this year’s posts I’m reminded of so many beautiful moments and fascinating clients. So, here’s to a new year, being thankful for the last, being inspired, and hoping for many more magical moments. Thank you for reading and always leaving such thoughtful comments here and on Facebook. I also want to give my heartfelt thanks to my clients, from the beginning to present, for allowing me to walk with you down your life adventures. Happy New Year!
