Meet Jaime and Jobil – seriously the sweetest and most sincere couple out there! Theirs was a traditional Indian Catholic wedding that took place in the solace of their suburban church, followed up by a pretty fly reception at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare.

What is cool and unusual about my relationship with this couple is that Jaime and Jobil booked me without ever meeting! That’s because I shot the wedding of their very good friends, Jimmy and Jency, several years ago (which coincidentally was my break into the Indian wedding community) and since then, have been referred through their network for countless occasions.

The entire wedding day (13 hours!) was graced with tradition – everything from the minute the bride left her house with her sisters following behind with lighted lamps to the ceremony when the groom tied a thali around her neck as a symbol of long lasting bliss. And let’s not forget about all the gorgeous details – the bride’s gorgeous peacock blue wedding shoes to match her bouquet, the stunning white wheels they rolled up in, and the ornate crystal and glass centerpieces. And of course, what Indian wedding would be complete without personalized flair – you know, giant cardboard cutouts of the bride and groom, glowsticks, fog, the whole nine yards!

I rarely book with clients I don’t meet with first. But when we met for the first time at their engagement session, it was instant chemistry between the three of us – and I’m pretty sure that’s because Jaime and Jobil are just so darn nice! I knew right then and there that they were going to have a super awesome wedding because they are super awesome people – and I hope these photos captured the spirit of the big day and their bright personalities. Scroll through for the magic of Jaime and Jobil’s wedding day!

chicago downtown surprised engagement proposal

Have you ever witnessed a surprise proposal? It’s authentic, romantic, and only slightly voyeuristic, and even when you know what’s about to happen, you can’t help but get some flutters in your stomach. Unlike the accidental photobombing In The Way guy, I saw Greg’s proposal to Cynthia because I was invited to capture the special moment through the lens.

The two lovebirds are from Michigan, but came to Chicago so Cynthia could take her medical boards. Theirs is the first ever surprise proposal I’ve shot, and it was so cool playing paparazzi behind the scenes!

I recommended a great place for Greg to propose – one that’s secluded yet pretty, right across the street from the Hilton Hotel on Michigan Ave. Not your typical touristy Bean shot, but far better in my opinion.

By the time they arrived, I was already hiding behind a tree. She thought they were going to a fancy dinner at the Signature Room, but then he dropped to one knee and she said yes! I was there for a good five minutes, clicking away, before Cynthia even noticed me.

We met up again on Sunday for Part 2 of their engagement session, this time all parties were in-the-know. The fabulous Tran Nguyen did Cynthia’s hair and make-up. Isn’t Cynthia the cutest?? She’s super bubbly and he’s a planner. (As if this wasn’t obvious judging by his long distance, well-coordinated proposal!) We met at the Buckingham Fountain and walked south to capture some joyful jumping shots in front of city skyscrapers, and finishing by the Agora feet sculptures on Michigan Ave. and Roosevelt for a true Chicago photo experience.

That’s right, folks, the magic happened right in Chicago, and you saw it first here! Congrats, Cynthia and Greg!

Some women might be afraid to be seen in a bathing suit while 7 months pregnant. Not me. I’ll pose for a photo shoot.

The Giant and I booked a special anniversary/maternity shoot with the talented Anna Kim Photography when we were in Maui last month. Funny, but true story: I kept changing the shoot date on Anna. It was originally scheduled towards the end of our vacay, but then I had second thoughts that I’ll be so fat from all the good eating and too tanned from all the sun. Two unflattering combos that don’t translate well in photos! So I begggggged Anna to squeeze me into her super-duper busy schedule and do the shoot at the beginning of our trip instead. Anna, thanks for putting up with your very pregnant client and friend! The shoot turned out terrific, have a look yourself!

Most people want to do beachy-type shoots in Hawaii. (Like, who wouldn’t?) But we wanted to capture the Hawaii’s other photogenic side, the one that is all lush and tropical and oh-so-exotic. Our shoot involved a hike down a hill, through mud and mosquitos. We got bitten like crazy, but at the end of it, a gorgeous waterfall and bamboo forest awaited us. So worth it! I also got more than a few looks from people – surely it’s not every day they see a pregnant woman making this hike – but as you know, being preggers is not going to stop me from doing what I have set out to do!

Next up, a forest of eucalyptus trees! Don’t they look kinda fake? (Fact: They smell great in person!)

Future brides, wanna know a styling trick for your next wedding shoot? Make sure to request some photos of your long veil fluttering in the wind. I borrowed that old trick for this shoot, using a long piece of fabric purchased at a material store in Chicago. The secret to success is a relatively windy location. Like it was here. I asked for wind, and BOY, did I get wind! In fact, it was so windy that I had a real hard time trying to keep the scarf flowing properly AND look decent for the camera.

We had a great time shooting with Anna Kim – huge thanks for capturing our growing family in such a lovely way!
